Bookviews – August 2013
By Alan Caruba

“Getting a handle on our emotions is often a lifelong effort. It is the reason there are so many books providing advice on how to deal with them. Over at New Horizon Press they make it a specialty. Just out this month is Smart Relationships: How Successful Women Can Find True Love by LeslieBeth Wish, ($14.95, softcover) is written for women who have achieved success in their careers but find that their romantic relationships do not endure. Many distrust their judgment about men or fear the toll of breakups…the author teaches women the structure of intimate relationships and how to break free of past failures. She explores self-sabotaging behavior and provides strategies to take charge of their love and workplace relationship decisions as she explores fundamental needs to feel safe and loved. I have no doubt this book will prove very helpful.”

Suicide spikes among middle-aged women

Dr. LeslieBeth Wish has found through her online surveys, lectures and focus groups a startling increase in suicide attempts with women ages 45 to 54. Women are susceptible to depression but older women may also be suffering from pre- menopause hormone fluctuations that can affect mood changes and depression. Also, existing long-term illnesses such as lupus or multiple sclerosis can worsen and breast cancers and other cancers might be diagnosed.

Dr. Wish also says middle-aged women are more aware of their mortality and may be disappointed and disillusioned that it’s too late for happiness. Transitioning to becoming an empty nester can also be stressful for women. Read More…

‘Dr. Judy’ Doubts Casey Anthony’s Penchant for Lying Can Be Cured

Two of the potential issues Anthony could suffer from are borderline personality disorder and psychopathology, the experts said. The main thing these issues have in common is a total lack of empathy, according to Dr. LeslieBeth Wish.
“They can turn a person into a non-person,” Wish said. “Borderline personalities have more emotional regulation problem and often use lying to get away from something and not ever feeling like they’re responsible.”

Wish explains that for people who suffer from these problems, separate lies can quickly become entire narratives that the teller can even come to believe as true.

“A lie begets a lie and it’s easy to get trapped in telling lies to protect other lies,” Wish said. “Does she believe her lies? She might, but more than likely she believes that she’s good enough to make you believe her lies.” Read More…

Smart men, foolish relationship choices

Both genders can suffer from “White Knight Syndrome” — the desire to rescue a romantic partner from his or her personal problems. But because a white-knight man is also fulfilling the traditional role of caring for a woman, he might end up hiding his true motives from both his partner and himself according to Dr. LeslieBeth Wish, who writes the “Relationship Realities” column at qualityhealth.com. “If you feel damaged or empty psychologically; if you were the black sheep of your family, for example, you might choose someone who is more needy and therefore more vulnerable than you are,” Wish says, adding: “A man should ask himself, ‘Do I tend to be in cyclical patterns with women who look up to me? Would I be comfortable with a woman who makes as much as or more money than me, has lots of interests and capabilities, and doesn’t have any serious limitations?’” Read More…
