Is Your Relationship Ready for Marriage?
Today more men and women of Generation Y, often called the Millennials, are postponing marriage. The numbers are still small, but the Census Bureau indicates an increase. The age of first marriages is getting older.
Why? Measurable reasons are related to both men and women deferring marriage until they complete their education and training. Well, that makes sense, you might be thinking.
But my research with hundreds from Generation Y reveals some other key reasons:
1) They fear making a mistake.
2) They fear getting close.
Both these fears stem from not trusting in love, men, women and the world in general. This generation, along with the previous Generation X, come from the largest group of children born to divorced or single parents.
These adult children report that the ugliness and stress of their parents' divorce or single parenthood have been so intense, unpleasant and difficult that they fear being disappointed and hurt by love.
They also say that they don't know what makes a good marriage or partner, and they fear "to the bottom of their soul" making a mistake and ending up just like their parents.
